Climate Change and People

Climate change and rural livelihoods can be considered both as a global and local issue, which mostly affects rural communities. Since they are more vulnerable, they have to adapt their livelihoods strategies to face different impacts of climate disruption of agriculture, access to natural resources and ecosystem services. It further affects ecosystems and species ability to adapt, and has become one of the most significant driver of biodiversity loss.

Uganda is amongst countries threatened by climate change impacts as seen through melting glaciers, such as Rwenzori mountains, declining water resources availability, shrinking flora-fauna habitats, tensions between wildlife, livestock and human communities.

1. Adaptation Strategies

A

Biodiversity conservation and climate change

Contribute to strengthening sustainable land management in fragile ecosystems, especially rangeland ecosystems and hilly and mountainous ecosystems

Ensure that human activity within the vicinity of protected areas does not compromise the integrity of the ecosystem

Contribute to strengthening the capacity for monitoring the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystems and ecosystem services

B

Forests and climate change

Promote afforestation and reforestation programmes

Promote efficient biomass energy production and utilization technologies

Promote agro-forestry

Contribute to forestry research, conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems

C

Wetlands and water

Contribute to the prevention of wetland degradation and encroachment

Promote restoration of degraded wetlands watersheds, water catchment areas, river banks and water bodies

Contribute to collaborative and participatory management of wetland resources

Participate in wetland research, conservation and restoration of wetland ecosystems

D

Adaptation in agriculture

Promote conservation agriculture and ecologically compatible cropping systems

Promote sustainable management of rangelands and pastures through integrated rangeland management

Promote agricultural diversification, and improved post-harvest handling, storage and value addition

2. Mitigation Strategies

1

Participate in conservation of forests and support implementation of REDD+ programmes

2

Participate in restoration of wetlands in order to enhance sinks of greenhouse gases.

3

Support conservation agriculture and ecologically compatible cropping systems and agricultural practices to increase GHG sinks.

4

Contribute to sustainable management of rangelands to reduce GHG emissions from soil and land degradation

5

Promote efficient firewood/charcoal stoves

6

Support farmers to establish commercial woodlot plantations, including peri-urban plantations

7

Participate in research and data collection and monitoring the status of the forests
